Hip-hop artist Kanye West’s fifth studio effort, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, was ranked by Rolling Stone as the best release of 2010 in the publication’s annual year-end album issue.

The news comes less than a week after it was reported that MBDTF pushed 496,000 units in its first week on the charts to claim the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200.

“With My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Kanye West made music as sprawlingly messy as his life,” Rolling Stone wrote of the Chicago native’s commercially successful and critically acclaimed album, CNN reports.

“Kanye [built] hip-hop epics, songs full of the kind of grandiose gestures that only the foolish attempted and only the wildly talented pull off. … He made all other music seem dimmer and duller. Is the album dark? Sure. Twisted? Of course. But above all, it’s beautiful.”

The Black Keys’ sixth album, Brothers, was ranked No. 2 by Rolling Stone, which described the blues-rock duo’s latest studio effort as “rock minimalism pushed to the max.”

Elton John and Leon Russell’s The Union and Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs finished third and fourth, respectively, in the publication’s best albums of 2010 list.

Country artist Jamey Johnson’s fourth studio album, The Guitar Song, was ranked fifth by Rolling Stone.
